“BREAKING BARRIERS”–  THE 2020 NATIONAL HISTORY DAY THEME
      and the Door County Bookmobile

The Door County Bookmobile is highlighted in this year’s National History Day theme: “Breaking Barriers.”
How could a bookmobile break barriers? Well, in the 1950's, rural areas of Wisconsin lacked the resources and support to build libraries in each town or village. Bookmobiles became an innovative idea (barrier breaker) to bring reading materials to the more remote parts of the state, breaking the geographic, cultural and socioeconomic barriers to education and demonstrating the Wisconsin Idea in action. But it wasn't just the bookmobile vehicle that broke the barriers, it was the people behind the idea, the people who fought to turn the concept of  'free library service for everyone, anywhere' into a reality. Who were those people and how did their vision impact our communities? Share your explorations and discoveries with the Egg Harbor Historical Society History "On The Move project" here .

THE BOOKMOBILE
IS ON THE MAP as an official object of Wisconsin history

The  Door County Bookmobile now has designation as a Wisconsin Historical Object in the statewide, collaborative public history project: WISCONSIN 101 Our History in Objects.

A map on the Wisconsin 101 website features the places of origin for all the objects in the Wisconsin 101 online collection, each telling a set of interconnected stories about Wisconsin’s history, people, and places. The project now proudly includes Door County as a pin on the map and two Object History essays of the Door County Bookmobile.
